Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is the LGBTQI+ Perception Index?
The LGBTQI+ Perception Index (GBPI) is a survey that gauges the LGBTQI+ community’s perception of human rights in 204 countries. The first iteration was launched on June 28, 2022, the 53rd anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising. The current survey will be available from August, 19-November 19, 2024.
2. Who are we?
We are the Franklin & Marshall Global Barometers, a research project on LGBTQI+ human rights, based at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. We have partnered with LGBTQI+ dating apps Grindr, Eden, and HER as well as a multitude of LGBTQI+ civil society organizations, including the Council for Global Equality, to conduct this survey. You can learn more about us and what we do here.
3. Will the survey be confidential?
Yes. Responses are completely anonymous and will only be used for research purposes. No identifying information will be shared with the public. This survey has been reviewed and approved by the Franklin & Marshall College Institutional Review Board (IRB).
Questions concerning your rights as a participant in this research may also be addressed to the Franklin & Marshall College’s IRB Chair at irb@fandm.edu.
4. Why did we create this survey?
There is often a gap between LGBTQI+-inclusive legislation and the lived experiences of LGBTQI+ individuals. The GBPI highlights these discrepancies to encourage governments around the world to take action and ensure that LGBTQI+-inclusive legislation is enforced and translated into a real, positive impact on the lives of LGBTQI+ people.
5. Who is the LGBTQI+ Perception Index for?
The survey is for anyone over the age of 18 who identifies as part of the LGBTQI+ community, inclusive of all sexual orientations, gender identities, gender expressions, and sex characteristics.
6. What is this survey about?
The survey will ask you questions about your lived experience in your country. It includes questions about your perceptions of and experiences with safety, acceptance, violence, and discrimination.
7. Why should I take the survey?
Most large-scale surveys on LGBTQI+ human rights ask about the attitudes of heterosexual and/or cisgender people towards the LGBTQI+ community. We want to hear from LGBTQI+ people themselves! Taking the survey will allow us to create a global dashboard of the lived experiences of LGBTQI+ people around the world. Your input will help researchers and policymakers take effective action to better the lives of LGBTQI+ people.
8. What languages are available for the survey?
The survey is available in 15 languages: Arabic, Bengali, Dutch, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Swahili, Thai, and Urdu.
9. How long will it take me to finish the survey?
