Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Perception Index Survey?

The LGBTQI Perception Index Survey gauges LGBTQI community perceptions of human rights in 204 countries. It was launched on June 28, 2022, on the 53rd anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.

2. Who are we?

We are the Franklin & Marshall Global Barometers, a research team on LGBTQI human rights based at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA. We have partnered with the Council for Global Equality to launch the Perception Index. Our other partners include Grindr for Equality and a multitude of LGBTQI civil society organizations around the world. You can learn more about us and what we do here.

3. Why are we creating this Index?

There is often a gap between LGBTQI-inclusive legislation and the lived experiences of LGBTQI people. The Index highlights these discrepancies to encourage governments around the world to take action and ensure that LGBTQI-inclusive legislation is enforced and translated into real positive impact on the lives of LGBTQI people.

4. Who is the Perception Index Survey for?

The Survey is for anyone who identifies as part of the LGBTQI community, inclusive of all sexual orientations, gender identities, sex characteristics, and gender expressions.

5. What is this survey about?

The survey will ask you questions about your lived experience in your country. It includes questions about your perceptions of safety, acceptance, privacy, violence, and discrimination.

6. Why should I take the survey?

Most large-scale surveys on LGBTQI human rights ask about the attitudes of heterosexual and/or cisgender people towards the LGBTQI community. We want to hear from LGBTQI people themselves! Taking the survey will allow us to create a global dashboard of the lived experiences of LGBTQI people around the world. Your input will help policymakers take effective action to better the lives of LGBTQI people.
